Stem Cells: Miracle or Evolution

Stem Cells: Miracle or Evolution

Stem cells are progenitor cells that can grow into any cell type, including skin cells, thus providing one more resource to achieve skin rejuvenation.

In dermatology the use of stem cells is called autologous fibroblasts. This is used in the recovery of wrinkle fills, scars, and skin irregularities thus improving the appearance and function of skin tissue.

This process is performed as follows: First we'll do a skin biopsy, or cut off a piece of skin from one photoprotected area. This material will be sent to a laboratory for a cell culture. After a few weeks, the dermatologist will receive the cultured cells (fibroblasts autologous) packaged in syringes, ready to be applied to the patient. The treatment is conducted in three sessions, with 15 to 20 day intervals between them. The final effect is consolidated a few weeks after the last application and lasts for about five years, depending on the aging process of each patient. This treatment is already performed in Europe and the USA with great satisfaction from patients. The procedure is already being done in Brazil by some dermatologists. The limitation is the high cost of the procedure, which is around $15,000.00 dollars.
