Simple and Effective: The Sling Procedure

Simple and Effective: The Sling Procedure

Since Urinary Incontinence is a mechanical issue, the correction is done by a very simple surgical procedure called the sling procedure. During this surgery, a plastic tape made of polypropylene, known as a sling, is placed on the bladder and will work to reposition it, restoring the natural angle. “Urinary incontinence with a 100% effective solution is the incontinence of effort”, declares Dr. Ronsini.

Surgery lasts, on average, 40 minutes. The anesthesia is usually an epidural block or rack anesthesia. Usually, there is no need for general anesthesia, only in case of videolaparoscopy, which takes longer.

Recovery from sling procedure is really fast and, on average, about 7 days following the procedure the patient can already resume their regular activities.

A possible complication of the urinary incontinence surgery is urinary retention; however, it can be easily corrected, assures Dr. Celso.
